Responsibility

At Näkkälä Adventures, tourism responsibility means respect for Sámi culture. This incorporates reindeer herding, nature conservation, sustainable development, and safety, as a significant part of our tourism adventures.

Sami culture

Samuli was born in the village of Näkkälä to a Sami family of reindeer herders. That is why we are strongly connected to Sámi culture. For us, it means that we want to present the culture exactly as authentic and as it is today. The Sámi language and culture are a natural part of our everyday life. For tourists, it can be seen as local knowledge and the ability to move in nature at any time of the year. Both in everyday necessities, habits and, for example, accessories. Making traditional handicrafts is an everyday thing for us.

Reindeer industry

The reindeer determines the year's work, calves are born in the spring, they are marked in the summer, and at the end of the year they are separated for sale and life. Reindeer live all year round in the wild, so they are not always in the village. On the Näkkälä trip in the winter time, you can see and photograph reindeer in safe conditions at the fence of our home yard. Or take a trip to the fells so that the reindeer are used to a small group of people. Reindeer programs are implemented on the condition of the animals so that the animals are not disturbed.

Nature Conservation and Sustainable Development

We only use existing routes, also in winter. We are in the process of changing the sled equipment to four-stroke sleds with lower emissions and noise. In our vision of the future, we have electric sleds. We carefully sort the waste generated on trips and have completely given up disposable containers. We guide our customers on litter-free camping and sorting in our rental cabins. The cabins have composting wood. The cottages without electricity have solar panels to generate power for LED lights and cell phone chargers. We repair the old, and where possible, we use recycled material. We observe from a distance to avoid disturbing the animals or unwanted animal movement. We don’t do recreational catch and release fishing, or hunting. We only hunt for food.

We are a partner of Metsähallitus and follow their principles of sustainable development and nature conservation.

Safety
A safe and memorable experience is our main goal on our trips. We always think about trips and programs
from a safety point of view first. Where to go and with how many guides and what challenges the weather
and weather conditions cause. For motorized tours, drivers must be over 18 years old. There is zero
tolerance for alcohol. We have a GPS emergency transmitter and a message system between the guides.
We maintain the equipment regularly and instruct customers on the safe use of the equipment.
